Porcelain in Process: Wheel, Altering & Fire

Join ceramic artists and longtime friends Leah Leitson and Susan Filley for a hands-on exploration of porcelain. With more than four decades of experience each, Leah and Susan bring two distinct yet complementary approaches to creating functional vessels that explore form, surface, and the expressive possibilities of the material.

Through demonstrations, hands-on making, and individualized guidance, participants will investigate a variety of approaches to working with porcelain. The workshop will focus on wheel throwing, altering, and handbuilding techniques, encouraging each participant to discover their own approach to making and design. Leah and Susan will share their methods for creating fluid, thoughtful vessels while exploring surface possibilities through colored slips, slip trailing, carving, and other decorative techniques.

Participants will gain insight into the relationship between form and surface, the importance of thoughtful decision-making throughout the making process, and the unique qualities that emerge when porcelain is glazed and fired. The workshop will include demonstrations, discussions, and ample studio time with personalized feedback from both instructors.

Students will have the opportunity to glaze and fire their work in a cone 10 gas reduction kiln. Please bring three bisque-fired pots suitable for cone 10 firing to glaze during the workshop.

Designed for potters with prior clay experience, this workshop offers an opportunity to expand technical skills, refine personal expression, and explore new approaches to working in porcelain.
