Artist Statement
Hillary Jackson preserves specimens from nature, primarily botanicals and butterflies, and pairs them with natural materials including gemstones and metals to create wearable works of art. Her proprietary preservation and resilience process incorporates many traditional techniques along with more modern media, like resin, allowing for the sustainability of the specimens’ beauty. Sustainability also plays an integral role in her sourcing of butterflies, which she purchases through lepidopterists who procure the deceased specimens from butterfly aviaries. Perennial botanicals usually come from her gardens and home ateliers in both coastal Connecticut and Atlanta, Georgia.
