Soda Firing Bring Your Pots to Fire! and Making Lively Pots, Working Soft on the Wheel
In this workshop, we will bring cone 10 bisque ware to decorate, glaze, and load to fire the Bascom's soda kiln, plus we'll make pots too. Soda fired pots tend to be dramatic and brilliant; this workshop is a rare opportunity to experience and learn more about it. We'll cover practical and aesthetic aspects of soda firing including slip and glaze application, prep for and how to load and fire the kiln. During heating up and cooling the kiln, we will explore ways to make more dynamic pots. Working with freshly thrown clay, we'll alter surfaces and forms; squaring, ovaling, fluting, faceting, and improving foundational throwing techniques will be on offer. In learning to fully utilize the effects of flames carrying sodium through a kiln, we'll look at placement in the kiln as well as form and surface treatments, including slips and glazes, that are particularly responsive to the effects of soda firing. Experience throwing on the potters wheel is needed for this class. We’ll engage in lively conversations ranging over our interests, passions, technical questions, developing a personal aesthetic, raw glazing, single firing, firing.

Join me in my 16th year teaching palette knife and particular brush techniques using Cobra water mixable oils. (Or your own choice) My class is always called From Realism to Abstraction with focus on how the landscape is always the main focus and can be abstracted. |
The Abstracted Landscape
This 4-day class covers the fundamental tenets of design in art. It’s not specifically a non-objective (pure abstract) class, you get to decide the level of abstraction you wish to explore. It is more of a learn-how-to-think class where you learn a process that you can use to explore new ideas. It’s a crash course on finding authenticity in your work. We cover the seven tenets of creative expression and the language of art. Larry’s intent is to help each artist find a way that works that is unique to them, whether they wish to interpret from life, push their process, or go fully abstract. |

Sgraffito, a method involving carving or scratching through layers to reveal the clay beneath, will be the primary focus. This class is suitable for seasoned beginners, intermediates, and advanced students experienced in working with clay. Participants will independently create forms through wheel throwing or hand building, emphasizing sgraffito by layering vibrant underglazes and slips and drawing on the clay surface.
