Professional Development Opportunity for Educators in Macon and Jackson Counties!

The Bascom and The Southeast Center for Arts Integration: SECAI inspires teachers to embrace the arts as the powerful teaching tools they are by engaging them in experiential, arts-integrated learning that all teachers can use.

The Bascom and The Southeast Center for Arts Integration (SECAI) are working together for the first time in 2020 to motivate educators in Western North Carolina to use the arts in the classroom by demonstrating connections between brain research, multiple intelligences theory, and state standards. SECAI inspires teachers to embrace the arts as the powerful teaching tools they are by engaging them in arts-integrated learning that all teachers can use in the classroom. We enable them to teach with the arts immediately by providing practical tools and demonstrating arts-integrated lessons.

Immerse yourself in the topics below during your
experience at The Bascom with SECAI.

Boost Literacy for Kinesthetic Learners:
Games We Can Play

Sheila Kerrigan

We know our youngest students learn by doing,
playing, interacting, telling and repeating. Students
of all ages whose primary learning modality is
kinesthetic can benefit from content-based activities
that reinforce literacy skills. We will play games
that you can use to support learning in a variety
of subject areas, and make connections between
movement and memory.

Reflection, Collaboration, Lesson-Planning

Sheila Kerrigan and Jen Crickenberger

We will reflect and report on what we have
experienced, choose the activities most relevant to
standards we teach, discuss ideas with a partner,
make a lesson plan we can use in the classroom, and
share it with others.

The Art of Digital Literacy:
Blending Photography & Poetry

Jen Crickenberger

Bring your own, or your school's devices with
forward-facing cameras and learn how to put
them to use in this fun, laid-back workshop! Learn
how to use your own device to capture and edit
gorgeous photographs to inspire written narratives
and poems. Students love this project and it even
gets them excited about writing! Teachers will
leave with information on apps they can use in their
classrooms as well as new skills in photography and
digital literacy. This workshop connects to NCSCOS
standards for Art, Digital Literacy and Literacy.

Reading, Writing, and Speaking Visual Art
Sheila Kerrigan

We will observe visual art in The Bascom, examining
it critically and asking questions to glean information
and make inferences. We will draw connections
between visual literacy and textural literacy. Using
the information we've uncovered, we'll change our
point of view from observers to actors to write short
dramatic scenes based on our understandings of
an art work, and share them by reading aloud. We
will reflect and discuss ideas for lessons, extensions,
and applications. (Visual Art, ELA--Reading, Writing,
Speaking, and Listening--and Theatre Arts)
