Full STEAM Ahead! Deepen Understanding of Science through the Arts - A Workshop for Educators

Full Steam Ahead Science Art Web Banner

You will experience active learning strategies to teach science and math through art, movement, dance, drama, and poetry. You will leave with practical tools you can use on Monday to spark curiosity, deepen engagement, and strengthen memory through the arts, in science and math.

Two professional development opportunities for Macon and Jackson County Teachers will take place at The Bascom in Highlands March 4 and April 15. Teachers will actively engage with the art in the Bascom and connect it to math or science. The Southeast Center for Arts Integration’s educators and teaching artists, who have decades of classroom experience, will lead the workshops. They will incorporate brain research, multiple intelligences and social emotional learning with the NC Standard Course of Studies in Math and English Language Arts, and Essential Standards in Science, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts, and Dance.

Workshops are FREE!

Coffee, snacks, and lunch provided.

A Certificate of Completion, that teachers can submit to their district for CEU credit, will be provided.

Deepen Understanding of Science through the Arts

Why and how do we use movement and theatre in the classroom? What connections can we make between visual art and science? How can students learn science through dance and drama? I’m not a dancer—how would I lead a science-and-dance lesson? What connections can we find between State Standards in Dance, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts, and Science? Join us for a fun, interactive, and experiential day of professional development that answers these questions.

Participants will:

  • learn simple structures from art, dance, and drama that can teach science concepts
  • gain confidence with using movement and drama games in the classroom
  • understand how learning through the arts can boost memory, aid kinesthetic learners, foster creative thinking, and teach SEL
  • discover natural connections between visual arts, dance, theatre arts, and science
  • outline a lesson plan they can use in class
  • receive a certificate of completion to submit to district offices for CEU credit.

Welcome and Introduction to The Bascom

What’s Up With Gravity?—The Drama in Science; the Science in Art

With Sheila Kerrigan, Mime and Teaching Artist

Physical science is full of abstract ideas and invisible forces, yet young people are concrete thinkers. This workshop will transform abstract concepts like inertia into physical experiences your students won’t forget. You will discover connections between art in the Bascom to science. You will explore ways to get students curious, engaged, and excited while they embody and learn physical science concepts, vocabulary, and meaning.

Moving with Ecosystems—Exploring Science through Visual Art and Dance

With Susan Woodham, Dance Educator and Teaching Artist

Participants will explore the building blocks of dance (body, energy, space, time, relationships) as they experience the differences among ecosystems and explore plant, animal and aquatic life within an ecosystem. Inspired by the artworks on exhibit, participants will take science essentials and develop movement sequences based on the vocabulary. You will share and discuss movement sequences using dance and science vocabulary. Come prepared to move and have fun while learning.
