Spring Fling with Colette Clark
  
May 9 and 16

Level: All

Learn the technique of appliqued flowers and leaves to ceramic vases, which will be covered on day one of the workshop. 
The second class will be all about glazing. Students can expect to receive 2 green-ware vases to work with during the class.

Delightful Pottery with Elise Delfield

May 20-25
10 am – Noon & 1 pm – 5 pm
Level: All

Work with Elise on throwing an altered pot on the wheel and creating unique slab trays. Elise will demonstrate her techniques including how she paints with ceramic stains. She will be delighted to talk about her influences, why she makes, and answer questions about anything clay. Bring your clay tools and brushes.  At the end, students may have some some work to finish at home.

Fun Fun Functional!  The instructor will pre-make the mugs and bring them to class.  He will then show students how to create a face, either human or animal and apply that face to the mug.  Sign up for one or register for all.  This will be a fun class so don’t miss this opportunity to make your own face mug!  Student mugs can be picked up within 3 weeks of class date.

Goats & Other Critters with Colette Clark

Create a Goat or other Critter in this 2 day workshop.  
June 6th: Build your animal!

Three Potters’ Symposium with Kyle Carpenter, Michael Kline, and Ron Philbeck

Please join us for the 8th annual Three Potters Symposium in the Dave Drake Studio Barn.  This year we are delighted to host Kyle Carpenter, Michael Kline, and Ron Philbeck.  A variety of wheel thrown techniques will be demonstrated as well as decorating and finishing.

Creating Totems with Barry Gregg

June 25 - 29 
10 am – Noon and 1 pm – 5 pm 
Level: All

Explore form, surface, and essence in creation of a life totem and explore hand-building techniques to create large forms that will be stacked to create a finished totem for the home or garden. This is a hand-on workshop, and each student is encouraged to bring ideas and inspiration to make work that 
tells a personal story. A number of techniques will be demonstrated during the workshop. Mixed media elements, surface treatments, figurative and abstract forms will be discussed during the course of the workshop.

Methods of Making with Joey Sheehan

July 30 - August 3 
10 am – Noon and 1 pm – 5 pm 
Level: All

Focus on making functionally influenced work using a combination of wheel thrown and hand built concepts.  Make pots for the table by using thrown parts and assembling pieces formed from the wheel, slab, and coil. We will discuss and explore methods of surface texture and finishing that will emphasize the form of the pots created. Designed to teach concepts of the wheel as a tool, and how to creatively integrate multiple processes in the studio to form unique and unified pots.  We will take the fear out of throwing and put the fun into forming!

Slow Down and Approach Hand-building with Jim and Shirl Parmentier

August 6 - 10; 
10 am – Noon and 1 pm – 5 pm 
Level: All

This workshop focuses on using the slab roller and extruder. Students will design and hand build forms, then alter and decorate their pieces.  Jim and Shirl will demonstrate how they proceed with their own design sequence.  Students will leave the workshop with new skills in using the extruder and slab roller.  These skills will include assembling slabs and extrusions, altering forms and then carving. No previous hand building experience required.  It does require a desire to learn hand building for the love of form, function and surface treatment.

Raku: Fundamental to Experimental with Emphasis on Advancing Throwing Skills with David Westmeier

August 27 - September 1; Monday – Friday
10 am – Noon and 1 pm – 5 pm
Level: All

Combining wheel thrown forms 
with slab-built additions creates 
both utilitarian as well as sculptural expressions in clay. Daily demonstrations on enhanced throwing techniques will be provided. A primary focus to improve throwing skills for the student with at least a basic level of proficiency on the wheel. Thin and even walls are the goal. Cylinders and bottle necks will be the vehicle to achieve those goals. All pots will be fired in raku.

Saints and Sorcerers with Colette Clark 

September 12 & 19th 
10 am – 1 pm 
Level: All

Create a Garden Saint or Sorcerer in this 2 day workshop.  
September 12th: Build your figure complete with accessories, ie. Brooms, shovels, hats and furry friends!  September 19th: One week later, glaze your creation and leave it to be fired.

Attention to Detail with Kyle Carpenter
 
September 17 - 21
10 am – Noon and 1 pm – 5 pm 
Level: All

This workshop will focus primarily on developing throwing and decorating skills. We’ll cover techniques for repeating, joining, and altering functional forms as well as adding surface decoration with texture, slip, glaze, and commercial underglaze. These techniques can be applied to all types of firing methods and temperatures. Discussions about aesthetics, studio life, and business development will be ongoing throughout the workshop.

Head Space with Kelly Thiel

October 1 -5
10 am – Noon and 1 pm – 5 pm 
Level: All

This workshop will focus on building heads and the faces of one male, one female, and one animal.  We will be using armatures to build upwards, and will be stacking the heads to create one vertical totem.  Let’s take a walk around the Bascom to find natural elements to use in our sculptures – using rocks and sticks from our inspiring surroundings can add a special energy to our sculptures.  The workshop will include a demo of finishes, as well as, exercises and practice in doing difficult facial features.

Finding Your Form Through Nature with Alice Ballard

October 22 - 26 
10 am – Noon and 1 pm – 5 pm 
Level: All

Alice Ballard will demonstrate several hand building and surface treatment techniques, including pinch pots, dowel pots and slab construction. The class will be hand-building clay vessels for 
all that great “natural stuff” that you love to collect. This will include hands-on participation. Bring your collected treasures for inspiration or direct impressions into the clay surface. A journal is also necessary. Participants will also get a chance to experiment with terra sigillata.

Refund Policy: The Bascom reserves the right to cancel any program that does not meet minimum enrollment and refunds will be made. In the event a student requests cancellation prior to 30 days of class/workshop commencement, he/she will be offered a course transfer or refund, less a $50 processing fee. If a student cancels within 30 days prior to the first day of class, no refund will be made.
