October 17-19 10 am – 4 pm Medium: painting Robin’s affiliations include the Southeastern Pastel Society, Pastel Society of North Carolina, Pastel Society of North Florida, North Georgia Art Guild, Past Presidents of the Art League of Highlands and the North Carolina Macon County Arts Council. Former director for the The School of Visual Arts at Sautee Nacoochee Center , she is now the director for ATELIER: Academy of Fine Art and Design in Clarkesville Ga. Trained as, Educator and Art Therapist, at the University of Vermont and schooled in graphic arts, traditional and classic watercolor, gauche and oils at the Art Students League in NYC where she worked as a textile designer, she instructs in numerous medium, including pastels, watercolor, oils and drawing to name just a few. This strong graphic arts background gives Robin an excellent grounding in color theory, composition and design. Robin teaches workshops regionally as well as internationally. Her work has been featured in various articles and as cover art on numerous journals, newspaper and art show publications. She has won top awards in her favorite medium of pastels, at many top juried art shows around the country. Her work is held in numerous corporate and private collections here and abroad. You can view her work on her web site: http://Robinswaby.com Supply List: The more pastels the better! Try to bring a wide assortment of whatever you have. (Pastelist's never seem to have enough colors and various kinds of sticks.-it is a necessity as well as an obsession it seems!). I recommend that you DO NOT buy all one brand, as much of my technique and lessons deal with learning WHICH pastel is right for the job! That means that just buying the biggest and the best of one brand, in my opinion (as well as a majority of professional pastelists ), is not the optimum way to paint in pastels. That does not mean you cannot do so, it just limits your ability to create different effects and utilize the wide range of choice and applications available to you. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND that for this beginner class it is not necessary for you to buy 100 different kinds of pastels; 50-60 different kinds would be sufficient. If you are working in Pastels, and use only one brand, this is a good class for you to start with, as I will cover a lot of this information in more depth, as well as really dealing with HOW these various brands will work to your advantage. If you have not painted with me previously, then by all means consider taking both sections of this workshop, or you will miss a lot of very useful information regarding technique and application. I go into great detail on all the brands (pastels and papers), the pros and cons of which to use. I recommend for this workshop you choose from the following GREAT AMERICAN or SHMINCKE, in mostly dark and light highlight colors. These are the ICING ON THE CAKE so to speak. (if you want a list of specific numbers and colors, please email me.) MAIN WORK HORSE BRANDS: UNISON, and MOUNT VISION, These type are in the middle ranges of hardness and are most useful for blocking in. These are used for the BULK OF YOUR PAINTING and are the best for that. Also nice to have are some TOWNSEND, RICHESON and LUDWIGS( in the DARKS), if you want to add a few more to experiment with.. I do NOT recommend SENNELIER except in a few colors, such as 177, 178, 412, 190, 2, 75 For Harder Pastels/Drawing techniques I recommend GIRAULT, NUPASTEL, CRETACOLOR and Carbothello Pencils. A large set of Nu Pastels is good to have as a base. In general I do not use REMBRANDT, but many students have these in their supply. Do bring them to use if you do have them, but I would not recommend stocking up on these, if you are new to pastels. Keep in mind the type of subject matter you usually paint and buy colors accordingly. Many so called "sets" include colors that you might not always use, so do not just buy SETS all the time. It is ok to get as a starter, but try to then add to your collection of colors by buying individual sticks, or small sets of a color range that is useful for you. If you are a landscape painter, you can NEVER have enough different greens for instance! PLEASE DO NOT BRING OR USE ANY OIL PASTELS. They are TOTALLY DIFFERENT ~!! PREPARE YOUR MATERIALS FOR CLASS Please come prepared to PAINT with your pastels, as opposed to only ready to "Draw"! By this I mean that it is crucial that you BREAK your pastels, into 1/2 to 1/3 working sticks depending on the color and brand/size of stick. By only using pastels still in the wrapper, you limit your freedom to PAINT and can only apply color in a drawing/dabbing manner. This is what I call drawing, not painting with pastels. We need to utilize the entire pastel, not just the tip! Go ahead...be brave! PAPER and SUBSTRATE we will use in this workshop. WE will work on COULOUR FIX PAPER for most of the session, and possibly use WALLIS later in the week. Please bring full sheets; size approximately 19x24 COLORFIX: 2-WHITE, 1-BLACK and 1TERRACOTTA. Please have a piece of each of these. WALLIS: 1 or 2 WhIte-Pro is fine to use. A full sheet is 24x36 in size and you can cut this into quarter and halves.(1/4 and 1/2 of the sheet) I do not mount my paper, but you can if you want. I prefer it unmounted for my techniques. PROTECTIVE MATERIALS: The only protective surface that works is really GLASSINE, and you can buy it in sheets and on a roll. Bring two sheets of FOAM CORE in the size of your papers, or a carry case to keep your papers in/between. You can hinge the foam core to make a case to slip papers into. Other surfaces you can bring to class and use are Uart (400 or 500 grit), Jack Richeson, Pastel Card or any other substrate you are used to working on is fine, if it is one you use regularly. SUPPORT: A smooth drawing board with clips, clamps or ability to take tape is great. It should have a smooth surface to attach the paper to, MASONITE hardboard, GATOR-BOARD or even FOAM CORE work fine. EASEL / Optional A stable field ease, French easel or table top easel to hold drawing board is fine. . I work flat on a table, and you might like to try my way to decide the best method for you. We will be working in a studio so outdoor gear is not needed for this workshop. GENERAL SUPPLIES: Tape to attach paper to your drawing board surface. A removable masking tape or ph balanced art tape is best. I personally do not use fixative, but if you must, the only one I recommend is SENNELIER Vine Charcoal stick or other colored pastel sticks/ pencils for drawing 2B and 4B pencils for sketching and note taking Sketchbook-Notebook, Pencil Sharpener, 1 small oil painter Bristle Brush A soft synthetic watercolor/acrylic brush Round number 8 , 10 or 12. Odorless Mineral Spirits, or Rubbing alcohol Paper Towels, drop cloth such as old bed sheet or plastic table cloth. Wet Wipes,Gloves in a bottle or other hand cream Smock/apron old hand towel Camera ADDITIONALY SUPPLIES: We will experiment with under painting techniques and you should bring a minimum of 5-6 liquid acrylic paint colors such as Golden or DaVinci liquid acrylics in primary /secondary colors. (small bottles are fine) Please bring some old brushes to use with these. REFERENCE MATERIAL you might like to paint from These should be YOUR OWN PHOTOS. PLEASE do NOT plan to paint from other artists’ works, from art books, or old masters images. We will be working from life/ set ups, as well as possibly photo reference material. (For those traveling, without pastels, in the start up class or just wondering if this is the medium for you, I can supply materials for you to work with for the week, for materials fee. Email me for details) (or if you need help finding supplies.) I will have some pastels and paper available at class. kalanustudios@gmail.com http://www.Robinswaby.com
