Tuesday-Saturday
September 11-15 10 am – 4 pm
Medium: ceramics
Level: II & III
Instructor: Fong Choo
Tuition: $445 member/$480 non-member
Recognized for his signature diminutive teapots, Fong will teach through
demonstrations, individual attention and lectures how to explore and
work in detail with the teapot form using references to the perspective
of proportions: From the diminutive / whimsical to the utilitarian /
large . There will be discussions and demonstrations exploring his
combinations of spraying mid range ( Cone 5-6 ) glazes as a base and
then layering low fire ( cone 03-04 ) commercial glazes and class
recipes, followed by firing the work to Cone 6 in oxidation. It is this
over melting and somewhat radical technique of glazing that creates the
jewel tone and other effects seen on Fong’s work, and now yours!
Participants will also be shown how to attach aesthetically pleasing
cane / reed handles on their work and a brief demo on some home made
tools as well.
Fong is currently an Adjunct Professor at Bellarmine University in
Louisville, KY and has taught many workshops nationally at centers like
Penland and Arrowmont School of Art and Craft and internationally in
Israel, Canada and most recently in The Republic of Singapore. Over the
years, his works have received the Excellence in Ceramics Award at The
Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington DC, Best of Show at the American
Craft Exposition in Evanston, IL and The Philadelphia Museum of Art
Craft Show in Philadelphia, PA. His work has also been featured on the
cover of Ceramics Art and Perception magazines in September of 2010.
