Program Descriptions:
Baptist Children’s Homes, Franklin
Since the fall of 2014, The Bascom delivers bi-monthly and monthly art workshops for residents of two Baptist Children’s homes in Franklin. Drake Cottage provides housing and care for teenage boys, while Moody Cottage provides housing and support for single teenage mothers and their children.
Bridge Park Pavilion, Sylva
Last summer, The Bascom instructors led free outdoor art workshops alongside weekly concerts at the Bridge Park Pavilion in downtown Sylva.
Cashiers/Glenville Recreation Center
The Cashiers community, young and not-so-young, doesn’t have to commute to get creative with The Bascom. The Cashiers/Glenville Recreation Center provides space for Bascom classes, such as printmaking, kaleidoscopes, and at-home Open Studio with Karen Weihs. Request a class today!
Community Table (CT), Sylva
Community Table was founded to provide a welcoming place for people to enjoy a good meal at no charge. Since 2014, The Bascom has facilitated intergenerational art classes on the first Thursday of every month at CT.
Cullowhee Community Garden (CCG)
In July 2014, The Bascom and CCG threw an art workshop for teenagers and adults at CCG. The volunteer-operated garden is a project of the Jackson County Department of Public Health, and half of the produce is donated to feed people suffering from a lack of food security in Jackson County.
Cullowhee Methodist Church (CMC)
Throughout the year, The Bascom and Cullowhee Methodist Church partner to teach art workshops for all ages. The Bascom and CMC held an Alternative Youth Group for children and teenagers in the summer of 2014.
Cullowhee Valley School (CVS)
The Bascom and CVS have joined forces to provide elementary and middle school children with art enrichment classes at CVS during the summer and regular school year.
Green Energy Park, Sylva
Each year, the Jackson County Green Energy Park hosts the Youth Arts Festival. The Bascom now has our own booth. Last year, the masses gathered around our booth to bind their own books, free of charge.
Hawthorn Heights, Bryson City
Beginning in 2014, The Bascom and Hawthorn Heights, a residential care center for youth, partnered up to provide weekly art classes for residents. Lessons include such topics as art history, printmaking and graphic design.
Jackson County Public Library, Sylva
Beginning in the fall of 2014, The Bascom and Jackson County Public Library teamed up to teach a monthly art workshop for teens and adults. Workshop topics include blind contour drawings, marbling, woodblock printmaking and lessons on pattern and frottage.
Mountain Trace Nursing Home, Sylva
In 2014, The Bascom and Mountain Trace Nursing Home came together to provide monthly art classes for senior citizens.
Scouting Groups
Over the past four years, The Bascom has served numerous Boy and Girl Scouts from Cashiers, Highlands and Franklin through art classes. These programs have been developed to help scouts achieve specific goals, like earning a crafts badge or engaging in community service projects.
Skyland Care Center, Sylva
In July 2014, The Bascom hosted an art workshop for the senior residents of Skyland Care Center. More plans for art classes at Skyland are on the horizon!
“Young Artists, Unite!” Exhibition at Highlands Hudson Library
2015 brings the third “Young Artists, Unite!” exhibition of youth art. Highlands’ Hudson Library hosts this exhibition, which features artworks created in Bascom outreach classes in Highlands, Cashiers, Franklin, Cullowhee, Sylva, and Bryson City.
