The Bascom Juried Member's Challenge

Inspiration from Black Mountain College

The Joel Gallery, June 29 - August 27, 2017

The Call for Entry for the 2017 Member's Challenge encouraged current members of The Bascom to be inspired by the artists and teachings of Black Mountain College. This year was a competitive submission process with review by our juror, Alice Sebrell, the Program Director for Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center.

Alice Sebrell, a native of Charlotte, earned her MFA in Photography from The Savannah College of Art and Design and her BFA from the University of Delaware. She has worked for the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center in Asheville, NC since 1999 and is currently the Program Director for the organization. In 2015, she wrote two essays about photography at Black Mountain College: “There is Another Way: Hazel Larsen Archer, Photographer, Educator” for Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933-1957 organized by the ICA/Boston and “Photography at Black Mountain College” for Black Mountain: An Interdisciplinary Experiment 1933 – 1957 at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin. Sebrell is also a practicing artist whose photographic and mixed media work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is in many public and private collections.

Please come celebrate this wonderful arrangement of selected artwork by members of The Bascom at the Opening Reception from 4-6pm on July 29, 2017. This is a wonderful annual opportunity to meet local artists and see the creativity derived from their inspiration from Black Mountain College.
