fund-raiser, Collective Spirits Wine and Food Festival, May 16—18, 2013
| What is Collective Spirits? During the weekend of May 16 through 18, 2013, The Bascom will present one of the Southeast's premier wine and food events for the culinary pleasure of more than 650 ticketed guests. The event is based in the art center's magnificent barn-like main building of vintage wood where events share space with exhibitions of unique works of art and craft and with lively educational programs. The Collective Spirits Thursday exclusive benefactor-only dinners will feature notable chefs and wines, expertly paired and showcased at the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau's finest homes. Friday’s activities will begin with an educational and informative component to the event by way of two spirited, wine-themed symposiums, held at 1:00 and 3:00 on The Bascom campus. A benefactor only VIP private wine tasting will be held on Friday afternoon at 4 P.M. in the Dave Drake Studio Barn, providing the true wine connoisseur with an exclusive opportunity to taste and buy some very rare and difficult to find world-class wines. Friday evening’s Stock Your Cellars Market will boast dozens of award-winning vintners offering tastings of an impressive and varied selection of wines for sale by the discounted case. On Saturday, Collective Spirits culminates with an elegant seated meal and live auction conducted by wine-specialist Greg Quiroga (Reynolds-Buckley) at Highlands Country Club. In May 2010 Quiroga doubled the previous year's net proceeds and, through a “Paddle Raise – Cause within a Cause”, amassed a six-figure seed fund for The Bascom's mountain plateau outreach and educational programs which benefit underserved children and families. What are the Demographics of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau? Highlands, NC, rated by the Wall Street Journalas the 99th most affluent town in the U.S, is home to five Wine Spectators’ Awards of Excellence restaurants. In addition, the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau boasts more than 20 private golf and tennis communities within a 15-mile radius, each serving haute cuisine and fine wines. Collective Sprits is widely promoted in the Southeast by The Bascom and media coverage includes articles in regional and wine specific magazines. Festival attendees come from Atlanta, Charlotte, Charleston, New Orleans, Orlando, Naples, Palm Beach, Memphis, Nashville, Birmingham and Sea Island among many touted locales. |

| Wine Seminars: ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Davis Bynum Clone Seminar with Rick Sayre of Rodney Strong Vineyards Winemakers have many secrets, and one of them is that within each grape variety, there can be several sub-varieties, known to the wine trade as “clones.” Although each clone of pinot noir can make a fine wine that indisputably tastes like Pinot Noir, there are subtle and sometimes obvious differences that winemakers use to their advantage to build complexity into the final wine. The goal of this seminar is to educate on the nature and history of pinot noir clones, and by tasting through six different examples, gain a perspective into the detailed work that is accomplished behind the scenes by the Rodney Strong winemaking team. Friday, May 17, 1pm at The Bascom $30 per person, open to the public _______________________________________________________
Symmetry Blending Seminar with Rick Sayre of Rodney Strong Vineyards The purpose of this seminar is to guide people through the art of blending, specifically Meritage red wine, using Rodney Strong’s Symmetry. By tasting each of the five varietals of a traditional Bordeaux blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, separately, a window of understanding is opened as to what winemakers taste and expect from each component. Then, through practical application, seminar participants see how the addition or omission of any one of the components relative to others can dramatically influence the final blend. Friday, May 17, 3pm at The Bascom $30 per person, open to the public |
