Title: Exhibition Manager
Reports to: Executive Director
Status: Full time, exempt position

The basic responsibility of the Exhibition Manager is to plan, develop and implement exhibitions that have a high degree of relevancy and capacity to engage current, new and undeserved audiences.

  • Confidentiality and thoughtfulness regarding the disposition, care and handling of original works of art
  • Work with Executive Director and Program Committee for selecting, planning, scheduling and overseeing installation of all exhibitions for The Bascom
  • Responsible for all negotiations for the lending of work from collectors, artists and/or museums; identifies and cultivates art collectors, curators and museums with works of art to lend
  • Receive, process, and maintain paperwork related to exhibits
  • Work with  artists, lenders, shipping agents during all facets of process 
  • Responsibility for safe handling and storage of artwork while being recorded, for their unpacking and packing, and transportation, and for keeping track of their movement at all times.
  • Create and maintain legal forms of registration, receipt of delivery, condition reports, photographic documentation, storage, lender's file, loan file, insurance, and transportation. 
  • Maintain the numbering system (accession numbers) of objects for the permanent collection, for extended loan, for temporary loan or exhibition, and for temporary deposit at   The Bascom. 
  • Create, implement and maintain digital images of all objects in custody at The Bascom.
  • Manage preparation of exhibition spaces: patching, painting, temporary wall structure etc. 
  • Develop printed interpretative and educational materials and coordinate with Education and Outreach on programming
  • Develop, order, pickup and hang wall copy and signage 
  • Exhibition installation and de-installation of art, lighting, signage and wall labels 
  • Monitor inventory of materials needed for exhibit installations and de-installations and restock if necessary
  • Regularly check exhibits for light outages, missing labels, humidity and temperature extremes and report to Executive Director if necessary
  • Work with  Shop to obtain and report information needed to process payments to artists for items sold during exhibitions
  • Packing and delivery of art from local studios
  • Resolve any cleaning and repair of loaned objects.
  • Work with Finance Director to arrange appropriate insurance coverage of each exhibit
  • Oversees care and conservation of the Permanent Collection
  • Work with Executive Director and Development on funding of exhibitions
  • Work within approved budget on all exhibits

Other duties as assigned.

M.A., M.F.A., B.A., B.F.A., in museum studies or a related field in fine art - Masters preferred; excellent written and verbal skills; excellent organizational skills strong proof-reading skills; stamina and ability to lift and move heavy and delicate objects; Some nights and weekend work required.

Use of a wide range of tools, equipment, and fixtures; thorough knowledge of collection registration methods; driver’s license and ability to have insurance coverage; knowledge of basic conservation concepts, procedures and terms; knowledge of crating packing and transportation methods; ability and willingness to maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail; and knowledge of fine arts insurance procedures and terminology.

Knowledge of museum standard handling, hanging, and lighting of artwork; and ability to photograph exhibition installations; working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and Adobe Photoshop or another photo editing program.
